Day Tripping: Natural Wonders and Cultural Excursions

In close proximity to many of Western North Carolina's treasures, ASH GROVE is the perfect base for exciting day trips.

Brevard, NC
Don't underestimate what this small town has to offer. Brevard Music Center showcases nationally known musical entertainment. Potters, glass artisans, blacksmiths, quilters, weavers, and other craftsmen, along with gift shops, antique and art galleries make shopping here irresistible. Take a waterfall tour to some spectacular falls that aren't on the map. Visit the Cradle of Forestry historic site. International dining ranges from Country Southern to Japanese to Mexican to Chinese to local trout and catfish. Beer, wine and liquor are available in restaurants and local ABC stores. Be sure to venture downtown early enough to catch a glimpse of Brevard's famous white squirrels before dinner.

Asheville, NC
"Altitude Affects Attitude". Asheville's theme captures the essence of the city. Here you'll find excellent shopping, fine dining, theatre, concerts, museums, sporting events, and nightclubs. And you can make reservations there to go whitewater rafting on the French Broad River.

Biltmore Estate
A not-to-be-missed site is the magnificent Biltmore Mansion and grounds. Check for special events including wine tastings, jazz festivals, and events to celebrate the seasons.

Cherokee, NC
Immerse yourself in the ancient, land-honoring culture or make your way to Harrah's Cherokee Casino for an exciting day trip. Tour the recreated mid-18th century village, shop for arts and crafts, and go see the educational and heart-rending drama, "Unto These Hills".

Cultural Activities
In additional to our natural beauty, the beauty of the arts is in our music, theatre and museums. The Porter Center brings nationally known musicians as well as recitals by Brevard College faculty and students to the campus. Live performances are brought to the stage by the Brevard Community Theatre and the Flat Rock Playhouse (the state theatre of North Carolina). The past comes to life at the Allison-Deaver house a circa 1815 mountain homestead. Literary history can be found at the nearby Carl Sandburg home and the Thomas Wolfe Memorial. In addition, there are many festivals, street fairs & celebrations. Click on "Brevard" above to get a current calendar.

Other Attractions
There are 7 golf courses within an hour's driving distance from ASH GROVE, including Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and Etowah Valley. Hiking and mountain biking in Dupont State Forest and Pisgah National Forest are just minutes away. Close by are a gem mine, horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, fly fishing on the Davidson River, Chimney Rock Park, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Gorge, Caesar's Head and Gorges State Parks and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
